KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Littledata’s fashion median is 1.3%; its top 10% threshold is 2.8%.
  • A low rate can start with the ad, the landing page, product information or checkout. Find the stage first.
  • Extra costs lead the surveyed checkout problems. Fashion shoppers also need to feel sure about fit.
  • Check profit and returns alongside conversion. A discount can bring more orders while leaving you with less money.

Why do shoppers leave without buying?

Start with the point where they leave. Checkout surveys tell us about people who got as far as the cart or payment; they don’t describe everyone who viewed a product and left.

Most commonly reported checkout problems

Baymard, 2026 · US online shoppers · excludes “just browsing / not ready to buy”. Respondents could select several reasons.

High extra costs lead this list at 40%. Slow delivery and trust follow. Show the total early, make delivery expectations clear and check whether checkout asks for anything unnecessary.

Where should you look when conversion is low?

Follow the same journey as a customer. Choose a stage below to see the problem, what to check and which figures to inspect.

Does the page deliver what the ad promised?

Someone clicks an ad for a particular dress, collection or offer and lands on a page that makes them start again. Or the polished brand they saw on social media turns into a generic store with weak imagery and pushy sales messages.

  • Open your highest-spend ads and follow each link on a phone.
  • Check that the product, offer, imagery and wording carry through to the page.
  • Make the next step obvious. Don’t make someone search for the item they clicked.

What to measure: Compare landing-page visits with product views and add-to-cart events for that campaign. Check new visitors separately from returning customers.

Store checks: Brand Worlds editorial guidance, informed by the original research linked below.

What makes buying fashion online harder?

You can’t try the garment on or feel the fabric. Baymard observed shoppers abandoning products because they were unsure about sizing. Its 2026 apparel survey also found that fit information was the most commonly sought detail in reviews.

What apparel shoppers look for in reviews

Baymard, June 2026 · apparel and accessories survey · information sought in reviews, not abandonment rates.

Show the details that remove the guesswork: relevant measurements, fit notes, close-ups, materials and what happens if the item isn’t right. Put the size guide beside the size selector.

Does the same approach work at every price?

Start with what the customer expects from your brand. A premium fashion ad followed by weak product photography and a wall of urgency messages can make the website feel like a different business. Review that mismatch before adding another promotion.

A minimal luxury page can still make sizes, materials and returns easy to find. Use expandable sections to keep the page quiet. Don’t treat a famous brand’s short description as proof that your customers need less information.

Does a higher conversion rate mean more profit?

Only if the extra orders leave enough money after the costs. A bigger discount can lift conversion and reduce what you earn. Selling more products that come back as returns can do the same.

Compare conversion with order value, discounts, returns and contribution per order over the same period. If you changed the offer, record it beside the results. Then decide whether the change was worth keeping.

Common conversion rate questions

Is a 2% conversion rate good for a fashion store?

Against Littledata’s current fashion sample, 2% is above the 1.3% median and below its 2.2% top-20% threshold. Then check whether those orders leave enough profit after discounts, shipping, ads and returns.

Why is my conversion rate falling when traffic is rising?

The extra visitors may be less ready to buy, or they may be landing on the wrong pages. Compare the same campaigns, devices and customer groups over time. Also check stock, offers, checkout errors and any tracking changes.

Do luxury brands need less product information?

A page can look minimal and still answer buying questions. Put size, materials, delivery and returns behind clearly labelled links or expandable sections. Brand familiarity may reduce some hesitation; it doesn’t tell a shopper which size will fit.

Should I add countdown timers to increase conversion?

Only show a deadline when it is real and useful. If a timer clashes with how you present the brand elsewhere, test removing it. Compare profit, returns and customer feedback as well as orders. We don’t have a reliable percentage for how often timers make premium shoppers leave.

Can I compare Shopify and GA4 conversion rates?

First check what each report counts as a session and a purchase. Use one reporting system for the calculation. A rate based on orders can differ from a rate based on sessions with at least one purchase.
